Mar Elias School for Gifted Students

Mar Elias School for Gifted Students is another unique innovation within MEEI. Providing extension of skills development and formation for leadership the programs of the Gifted School are developed specifically for a group of 120 students from the 3rd to 8th grades who have been selected from the top 2% of students. A major need in the Arab community and indeed throughout Israel is for highly principled, skilled leadership focused on building positive change throughout the society.
This group of students participates in extra-curricular activities designed to develop creativity and skills in critical thinking, problem solving and independent learning. In the only Art Center in the Arab community, a visual arts project is challenging students to explore themes of peace in the natural environment. Imagination and creativity are stimulated in a Cartoon Animation project which aims to open students to a wide range of thought. Through the generation of computer images students are encouraged to focus on a range of issues requiring critical thinking and skills of analysis. Using texts from the Christian Bible, the K'ran and the Torah another program has focused on field studies of "Animals and Plants of the Holy Land" in the light of the teachings of the three monotheistic religions.

There is a strong focus on communication skills centered on Arab culture in the community. Students have written the script and produced a video using the whole range of technology from filming through to final editing. This is a resource for the whole school and MEEI plans to release the students product more widely in the future. In 2002/2003 the students of the Gifted School in collaboration with students from the High School and College will establish and operate their own radio station.
